Toys and family is the vertical where influencer marketing gives brands the most, and the reason is simple: the person buying the toy is the same parent watching the creator. This is how campaigns for toy and family brands work in Italy, from picking creators to product seeding, from Christmas timing to the rules that apply when children appear in the content.
Why it works so well for toy brands
A toy is bought by an adult and used by a child. That double audience is exactly what a family creator already has: parents who follow them for advice, and children watching next to them. A reel showing a toy being opened at home does something a product photo cannot do, because it shows the toy in the situation where the purchase decision is actually made.
There is a second reason. Family content has high trust. A parent recommending a toy carries the weight of somebody who buys the same things for their own children, so the recommendation reads as experience rather than advertising.
The right creators are parents with a real audience
Follower count is the least useful number here. What matters is who is on the other side:
- Age of the children: a creator with a toddler is useless for a brand selling board games for eight year olds.
- Real audience: how many of the followers are Italian parents in the buying age range, which you read from the audience data, not from the profile.
- Engagement in the comments: family creators with a real community get questions like "where did you buy it", and that is the signal that converts.
- Tone with children on camera: some creators show their children, some do not. Both work, and the choice changes the concept.
We go deeper into the selection criteria in the piece on micro, macro and mega influencers.
Product seeding: getting the toy into a real home
Seeding means sending the product to the creator so they can use it before talking about it. In the toy sector it is close to compulsory, because a child needs time with the toy before the reaction on camera is genuine. A seeding campaign in Italy usually runs like this: a shortlist of family creators, the product shipped with a short brief, a free window of a few days for the family to actually play, and only then the content.
Done well, seeding also gives the brand something beyond the single campaign: creators who keep the product at home and mention it again on their own, without a new fee.
Christmas gets booked in September
For toy brands, the fourth quarter can carry most of the year's sales, and the content that lands in November was booked in September. Family creators fill their December calendar early, and the best profiles are gone by the end of the summer. Anyone starting to look for creators in October is choosing from what is left.
The rest of the year has its own moments: back to school, birthdays, Easter, and product launches tied to a film or a series.
The rules when children appear in the content
Content involving children is regulated, and the brand carries the responsibility together with the creator. Three points come up in every campaign we run in Italy:
- The commercial nature has to be visible and clear, with the advertising disclosure the platform requires.
- The consent of both parents is needed for a child appearing in a piece of branded content, and it needs to be written.
- The message cannot push a child to ask an adult to buy the product. It is a specific rule, and it is where most rejected concepts fail.
These points belong in the contract with the creator, together with usage rights and the duration of those rights.
The formats that work: unboxing and UGC
Unboxing works because it reproduces the moment of the gift. User generated content works because it can be reused: the brand takes the best pieces and puts paid media behind them, through whitelisting or Spark Ads, so the same content keeps running after the organic post is over.
What to measure
For a toy campaign the useful numbers are reach on parents in the right age range, quality engagement (saves and comments asking where to buy), traffic to the product page and, when the campaign is built for it, sales attributed with a code or a tracked link. The full method is in the article on the KPIs that matter.
Working with an agency in Italy
Brands come to us either from abroad, looking for Italian family creators, or from Italy, looking for a team that handles the whole thing. In both cases the work is the same: objective, creator scouting and selection, concept and brief, production, contracts and approvals, publishing, report. You can see the campaigns we have run for toy and entertainment brands in our case studies, and how the agency works on the main page.
